I would like to use this (not entirely accurate) term to describe decoration techniques that, in the professional sector, would probably be carried out using milling machines. For experiments or for processing individual pieces, using the lathe for this purpose is by no means an emergency solution, but - as my first experiment (Figure 1) shows - is actually particularly attractive.
For guilloche work on the lathe you need some additional tools, in particular a cross slide (support), a dividing device, suitable tool holders and some different shaped cutting tools. The cross slide of a precision mechanic's lathe that has long since been scrapped and a small piece of equipment have been living in the shadows for a long time. I am pleased to see that the center heights of the lathe and the parting device match exactly in my first test setup. By chance there is also a remnant of gray hammer finish paint. Treated with this, my own construction looks as if it has always belonged to the lathe (Image 2).
